Peter Brown\u2019s beloved book<\/em> The Wild Robot<\/em> has been adapted for the big screen by Chris Sanders, the director of<\/em> How to Train Your Dragon<\/em> and<\/em> The Croods<\/em>. The animated film, both written and directed by Sanders, is not just an entertaining piece for children, but also a story in which parents may find a mirror reflecting their own experiences of parenthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rozzum Unit 7134, or simply Roz, is a home assistant robot. However, for unknown reasons, she finds herself on a deserted island. As she tries to understand where she is, she begins observing the animals\u2019 use of body language and learns to communicate with them. She realizes that while animals share a common language, they speak it with different accents. During this process, she accidentally damages a goose nest while trying to defend herself. Not knowing what will come out of it, she protects the last remaining egg with great care. She becomes its guardian against all dangers\u2014especially the cunning fox Fink\u2014because Roz has been gently programmed to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the gosling hatches from the egg and sees this strange robot for the first time, it is initially afraid, then assumes Roz is its mother. Roz, like a new mother, is completely lost. \u201cI wasn\u2019t programmed for this. I don\u2019t know what to do,\u201d she laments. Her friend, a possum who has seven children, reassures her: \u201cDon\u2019t worry\u2014none of us really do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something is happening to this robot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Roz builds a nest for the baby, then gives him a name: Brightbill. Her animal friends teach her how to meet her child\u2019s basic physical needs\u2014the technical side of motherhood. Learning to eat, swim, and fly becomes a major part of Brightbill\u2019s journey. As a duty-bound robot, Roz patiently and carefully teaches him these skills. Brightbill grows through trial and error, risky adventures, and guided mentorship. Roz is determined to make sure he learns everything he needs to migrate south when autumn comes\u2014just like the other geese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But something is changing in Roz. Her effort to protect and raise her child gradually shifts from mere programming to the realm of emotions. She cannot define these unfamiliar feelings, but she senses their powerful impact. This newfound maternal instinct, which defies logic, brings with it conflicting emotions like fear and pride. Encouraging her child while worrying about potential dangers becomes one of the clearest expressions of this inner conflict. Like all mothers, Roz discovers that there\u2019s more to life than survival\u2014she begins to explore the meaning of existence. Or, to put it more accurately, she begins to recognize the abilities and strengths already written into her programming but yet to be awakened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do I do now?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As Brightbill matures and begins preparing to migrate with the flock, Roz is flooded with mixed emotions. She feels proud to have raised him well and on time, but also anxious about entering a phase where she is no longer needed\u2014and possibly left alone. These emotions come to a peak when Brightbill flaps his wings for the journey, and Roz looks to the sky to bid him farewell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brightbill\u2019s absence leaves Roz in a void\u2014a kind of emptiness felt by mothers who\u2019ve devoted themselves entirely to their children without leaving room for anything else. Initially falling into a depressive state, she soon realizes there are other creatures around her who need her help. She shelters the forest animals in Brightbill\u2019s old nest during a storm, and in doing so, becomes a hero in their eyes. Patiently, she awaits Brightbill\u2019s return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience of motherhood<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Wild Robot<\/em> emphasizes that motherhood is not only about protecting and raising a living being\u2014it\u2019s also about loving them deeply and doing your very best. It reminds us that motherhood is a natural process that cannot be fully described in theory, and one that is too unique to compare with others. Going beyond rigid ideals like \u201cA mother should be this or that,\u201d the film suggests we can discover our own unique parenting code by listening to the voice within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film also highlights a child\u2019s emotional needs, not just physical ones, and shows that parenting is a two-way learning experience. It makes clear that mothers, too, \u201ccrawl\u201d through this journey, needing affection and encouragement along the way. Without exaggerated glorification or the claim of perfection, the story underlines the value of being a good mother\u2014with all one\u2019s flaws and imperfections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a heartfelt recommendation for anyone who wants to understand the parenting experience and see the world through the eyes of a mother on her journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
