During pregnancy, a baby doesn\u2019t just eat and drink what the mother does\u2014they also feel what the mother feels.<\/strong> Despite Zeynep\u2019s seemingly orderly life\u2014married, calmly meditating every morning\u2014the womb of baby Metin turns out to be anything but peaceful or bright. Through him, we discover a complex, dark, even chaotic inner world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By now, we know that when we hear the name Berkun Oya<\/em>, we\u2019re about to watch a psychoanalytical script unfold on screen. Whether it\u2019s a series or a film, every character in Oya\u2019s works demands psychological analysis<\/strong>\u2014and A Round of Applause<\/em> is no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the surface, we see a simple nuclear family of mother, father, and child. But in reality, we are witnessing an unhealthy web of relationships where adults play the role of children, and children act as adults.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

A Child Used as Glue<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oya begins his story by criticizing the concept of \u201cfamily planning.\u201d In the relationship of Mehmet and Zeynep\u2014motivated by reasons like \u201clet\u2019s increase our lineage,\u201d or \u201clet\u2019s experience what being parents feels like\u201d\u2014the child becomes a kind of glue to hold the parents together.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the entire series, this \u201cchild\u201d continues in a role assigned to him but never chosen by him<\/strong>, and naturally, we never see him radiating joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Mustachioed Baby Metin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With a father, Mehmet, who never finished his own childhood or adolescence, and a mother, Zeynep, who can\u2019t decide what she wants in life, the resulting child, Metin, emerges questioning, \u201cWhy was I even born into this world?\u201d<\/strong> Raised by two adolescents in adult bodies, Metin turns into a bohemian adult trapped in a child\u2019s body.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why, even though we see him as a child or teen later in the show, Metin first appears as a grown man with a mustache still connected to his mother by the umbilical cord.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u201cI Don\u2019t Want to Be Born\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When the womb\u2014typically the safest space\u2014feels so unwelcoming, it\u2019s no wonder that the baby has no desire to be born.<\/strong> The mother approaches life with anxiety, feels unhappy in her marriage, and hasn\u2019t figured out what she truly wants or why. Naturally, the child lacks any motivation to enter such a world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even as a baby, a child, a teen, and eventually an adult, Metin struggles to find meaning and purpose<\/strong>. With a parent who can\u2019t even explain why she brought him into this world, he\u2019s never able to become a self-actualized, confident adult with a clear identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Everyone\u2019s Looking in the Wrong Direction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Zeynep, unable to find what she needs in her husband, expects to find everything in her son.<\/strong> The more shallow and surface-level the father Mehmet is, the deeper Metin thinks, almost like a seasoned philosopher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zeynep becomes an over-admiring, contradictory mother\u2014blind to her son\u2019s flaws, or even proud of them. She wants him to socialize but is also scared of him drifting away from her. In this Oedipal-like triangle, Mehmet remains a classic \u201cabsent father\u201d<\/strong>\u2014resentful of being sidelined but too emotionally disengaged to step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Zeynep obsessively watches over her son, and Mehmet passively watches Zeynep, Metin stares into the void within himself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Is Everything Really Okay?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a world where the parents themselves can’t find meaning<\/strong>, it\u2019s no surprise the child also struggles to see life as meaningful. No matter how many times they say, \u201cYou are so precious,\u201d or how much eye contact they make, Metin still feels worthless and lost<\/strong>\u2014because the parents\u2019 words and feelings don\u2019t align.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These two adults never took time to get to know themselves, nor did they begin their journey to parenthood with a clear and healthy motivation. They only have one truly honest moment of communication in the entire series.<\/strong> Their own lack of clarity causes Metin to not even know what exactly he\u2019s angry or rebellious about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

A Discomforting But Necessary Wake-Up Call<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Berkun Oya doesn\u2019t offer us a sweet, feel-good story. Instead, A Round of Applause<\/em> pokes, prods, and challenges us.<\/strong> Watching it feels like being yanked out of a warm bed into the cold street at dawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It makes us look at our own families\u2014ones we often feel proud of\u2014and ask, \u201cIs everything really okay?\u201d<\/strong> Even if this questioning is painful or uncomfortable, it brings awareness\u2014and can renew or reshape our motivations to be better spouses and parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With its acting, dialogues, and brilliant screenplay, Oya delivers yet another applause-worthy piece.<\/strong> If you\u2019re looking for a story that lingers with you, that deserves to be digested and reflected upon long after the credits roll, this is it.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
